St. Albert’s College, Kochi has been selected as one of the top 10 colleges in the world working to conserve endangered species, along with global biggies like Imperial College, London., Georgia Institute of Technology, USA and Lasell College, Massachusetts. The list of top colleges of the world was published yesterday by the US based website Bestcolleges.org. St. Albert’s is the only Indian College to feature in the ranking. The selection and ranking of St. Albert’s College was primarily based on the research carried out at its constituent research centre, the Conservation Research Group (CRG), established in 2007. Within a span of five years, CRG has become a leading academic and research centres committed to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the Western Ghats. With grants from, and collaborations with leading international universities, institutes and NGOs including the London Museum of Natural History, IUCN, Conservation International and the New England Aquarium among others, CRGs staff and students have carried out research that has helped generate information and develop methods to support conservation decision-making. Since inception, CRG staff has published more than 40 research papers in leading international journals, which has received more than 100 citations, besides delivering invited presentations in many countries of the world. CRG’s researchers are also contributing to global policy making on nature and natural resources through their involvement with agencies such as the IUCN. In the last one year alone, taxonomists associated with the research center have described four new fish species to science. The research centre routinely hosts many interns and volunteers from across India to work on their academic and research projects.
“When today’s college students were kids, the focus of most of the endangered animal education fell on whales, dolphins, bald eagles, and the rain forests. While some of these species have made strides away from the endangered list in the last 20 years, the list of global endangered species remains long. Luckily many colleges around the world including St. Albert’s College, Kochi are using their knowledge, resources, and student passion for conservationism to protect some of the most at-risk creatures in nature” - www.thebestcolleges.org
